Ophthalmology – derived from ‘ Ophthalmos and ‘ logos’ meaning science of the eye – is a branch of medicine which deals with the diseases of the eye and its treatment. An Ophthalmologist is a specialist in medical and surgical eye problems. Since, Ophthalmologist perform operations on eyes, they are both surgical and medical specialists. The dept. Of Ophthalmoloy was established in the year 1972. It joined hands with C.B.M Germany in 1974. Rehabilitation Centre for the blind was started under the department of Ophthalmology in 1974 with the assistance of C.B.M Germany. This centre provided vaocational training to the blind women. Children can have a myriad of eye problems.

Some of the relatively common disorders are refractive errors,  allergic conjunctivities,  watering of eyes due to blocked naso lacrimal duct,  strabismus (deviation of eyes),  amblyopia (lazy eyes),  lid abnormalities (ptosis),  congenital cataracts,  congenital glaucoma,  developmental abnormalities of the eyes,  abnormalities in the retina like persistent fetal vasculature syndrome (PHPV),  chorioretinal coloboma,  tumors (retinoblastoma),  foveal hypoplasia and optic disc abnormalities.

The developing visual and nervous systems in a child makes it necessary to have a different approach when dealing with pediatric eye problems. Special skills and equipment are required for successfully examining and treating children with eye disease.

Our aim is to diagnose paediatric eye problems at the earliest and institute adequate treatment to permit optimal development of the visual system.
