MMM Integrated Rehabilitation Centre For Addicts (MMM IRCA)

The centre was established in the year 1994 with financial support from the Union Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India.  The centre started functioning on 1st February 1994 and was officially inaugurated by then Hon’ble Minister of State for Welfare, Govt. of India, Sri. K V Thangka Balu on 10th April 1994.  The centre has extended services to more than eight thousand people with alcohol and other substance abuse problems.  The centre provides free comprehensive care which includes detoxification and psychosocial management such as yoga therapy, individual and family counselling, group therapy, spiritual therapy and treatment for medical and psychiatric co-morbidities.  In addition to the inpatient services, the centre provides outpatient services and conducts regular follow up of clients through phone calls and home visits.  Dr. V.M.D. Namboodiri, who had been instrumental in establishing the centre and was the first Project Director from 1994 to 2005. Dr. Joseph Varghese P, who took the initiative to start the centre, was the Project Director from 2005 to 2014.  Mr. Francis M.R, who has been working in the centre from 1994 as counsellor, is the Project Director from 2014.

Follow up Services

The centre provides free follow up medical care, counselling, home visits and vocational counselling for job placement, self employment etc.  The Alcoholic Anonymous, Al-Anon and Al-Ateen meetings are held regularly to support the sober living.

Community Services

The centre organizes regular awareness building programmes on substance abuse in the community.

Training Programmes

The centre is an accredited education provider of The Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (CPDAP) since 2018.
The centre conducts training on Universal Treatment Curriculum and Child Interventions For Living Drug Free-(CHILD) Curriculum developed and approved by The Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (CPDAP).  

NABH Accreditation

The centre was awarded NABH accreditation in 2018.  

International Accreditation

Mr. Francis M R, Project Director is an International Certified Addiction Professional (ICAP III).  He is also Global Master Trainer under the Colombo Plan and United Nations Office of the Drug Control (UNODC).
Ms. Nima N S, Senior Counsellor is also an International Certified Addiction Professional (ICAP I).

Collaborating Agencies

The centre collaborates with state, national and international agencies such The Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (CPDAP), International Society of Addiction Professionals (ISSUP), Federation of Indian non-governmental Organisations for Drug Abuse Prevention (FINGODAP), State Level Coordinating Agency  (SLCA), National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Govt. of India, Various NGOs and State Government departments such as Excise and Police, Nehru Yuva Kendra, Youth Welfare Board  and Taluk Legal Service Committee.

Research and Publications

Dr. Renju Susan Baby, former Professor, MOSC College of Nursing, conducted a study among patients who availed treatment from this centre based on a research topic “A longitudinal study to assess high risk factors for relapse and outcome parameters among currently abstinent patients having substance use disorders with and without co-morbid psychiatric illness”.  She was awarded Ph D for the same in 2016.
 
Mr. Francis M.R conducted three studies among the clients who underwent treatment in this centre such as:-

  • ‘A study on the prevalence of co-occurring psychiatric illness among alcohol dependents’, presented at the National Conference of Indian Society of Professional Social Work held in 2009.
  • 'A study of the sexual practices and HIV/AIDS awareness among alcohol dependents'  presented at the National Conference of Indian Society of Professional Social Work held in 2006 and  won the best paper presentation award.
  • `Myths and Facts of de-addiction treatment' with reference to MMM De-addiction Research & Treatment Centre’, presented at the National conference of Indian Society of Professional Social Work held in 1996.
